Check your headings

This tutorial will show you how to use our Accessibility Checker to check whether your headings are accessible. You can move through the tutorial at your own pace using the NEXT button below.

When you're editing a page, you'll see the blue Accessibility Checker button is now present in the bottom right-hand corner of the main text box.

To check whether your heading hierarchy is correct, click the blue button.

If there is a problem with your headings, a red error will appear. Click this to get more information about the problem.

Use the Error message to check and reorganise your headings.

When you've made your changes, click the Accessibility Checker again and make sure that you've solved any errors.

Remember: headings need to follow the correct hierarchy to be accessible for people using screen readers.

Most pages will use Heading 1 for the page title, so you should follow with Heading 2 for major sections of a page and then Heading 3 for sub-sections.
