By default Canvas assumes we want to know more than most of us want to know as parents. When we create our accounts, their default notification settings have us immediately notified for a lot of activities. We need to go in and change it following the directions below. Notifications are always editable, so you can go back in anytime and change your settings.
Click on Notifications icon for any activity. You can hover over any activity with your cursor and a description will pop up.
Canvas offers different levels of Notifications; Notify immediately sends a text every time that action happens, Daily summary sends one daily email with a list of actions, Weekly summary sends a weekly email with a list of actions, and Notifications off does not send any email for that specific action.

Canvas offers a messaging service, but the good news is that it syncs with your email so you never have to check it as long as you have the Notify immediately notifications set in Conversations. If a teacher sends a message to you in Canvas, it goes to your email and you can respond right in your email. The message then syncs with Canvas back to the teacher.

These instructions were set for all courses on your account, however, you can also go in to each course and set up individual notifications if you want to see more from a specific course.
