Created Feb 13, 2023VIRTUS Account Registration & Training Requirements
This step-by-step tutorial walks through registering a VIRTUS account to complete Safe Environment/VIRTUS requirements. The Diocese of Jefferson City uses the VIRTUS platform to store volunteer information, training history and background check status. This platform serves as the database for all clergy, deacons, religious, employees/educators, adult volunteers, and parents involved with any Diocesan agency, parish, or school. As the social services outreach arm of the Diocese of Jefferson City, it is required that Catholic Charities volunteers create a VIRTUS account and are in compliance with Safe Environment/VIRTUS policies prior to serving with us. These instructions are intended for new users only. Catholic Charities will verify completion of Safe Environment/VIRTUS requirements for volunteers who already have a VIRTUS account with the Diocese of Jefferson City.
If you work or volunteer in another location in the Diocese of Jefferson City, select Yes and follow the prompts to add additional locations to your account. Catholic Charities volunteers intending to serve with the Refugee Services English Language Training (ELT) at Sacred Heart should select Yes and choose Sacred Heart Parish (Columbia) as another location.
If you are not involved with the ELT program at Sacred Heart or at another location in the Diocese of Jefferson City, select No to proceed to the next page.

Select Yes or No (whichever applies to you) for the first and third questions. Because of the nature of our programs and services and our ministry to to serving the poor and vulnerable, all Catholic Charities volunteers will select Yes to the second question. Select Continue to proceed to the next page.

Select No to the question regarding a background check, then select Continue to proceed to the next page. Even if volunteers have had a recent background check with another agency, the Diocese of Jefferson City will require new users to complete a background through the VIRTUS platform.

The Code of Pastoral Conduct is a document outlining conduct expectation for clergy, deacons, religious, employees/educators, adult volunteers, and parents involved with any Diocesan agency, parish, or school. Most pages of the document do not apply to Catholic Charities volunteers. Anyone serving as a volunteer with Catholic Charities should review page 13 of 16 (labeled page 11 of the document) contains the Volunteer’s Code of Conduct. Checkmark the box “I hereby acknowledge that I have downloaded, read, and understand the attached document,” then electronically sign acknowledgement of this document by typing in your name (first, middle initial, last name) and entering the date. Select Continue to proceed to the next page.

One of the Safe Environment requirements is completion of a child-safety training course entitled VIRTUS Protecting God's Children. This training is free, and can be completed either in person with a trained facilitator or online through self-led modules.
By completing this training, Catholic Charities volunteers join the network of over 21,000 people in the Diocese of Jefferson City who know the warning signs of predatory behavior, know the Diocese’s code of conduct, and know how to report suspicious activity of anyone who might want to harm children.

Most volunteers opt for the Protecting God's Children Online Awareness Session. Select desired training session from the list of options, then Submit to register for the training. After successfully registering, a confirmation message will appear on your screen. Contact the Diocese of Jefferson City at 573-635-9127 for more information on in-person sessions.

The online training will open in a new window. Users should continue using Google Chrome to complete the training modules (using an alternative browser could result in system/page errors). This training takes 1-2 hours to complete, and can be paused and continued at a later time.
This program provides education regarding how to detect possible abuse, both in circumstances and events, which might indicate grooming behavior as well as signs of abuse displayed by minors themselves. All employees, priests, deacons, religious brothers and sisters, seminarians and deacon candidates must keep current on their continuing training video modules and other additional renewals as requested. Alternative safe environment educational materials are available for those who are survivors of sexual abuse. For inquiries, please contact the director of the Office of Child and Youth Protection in the Diocese of Jefferson City at 573-635-9127.
A background check will be prompted through VIRTUS Online following completion of the VIRTUS Protecting God's Children Session. Click here for step-by-step instructions for completing a background check through VIRTUS.
